A quick look at our favorite new releases from Omega at Baselworld 2018.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M

This year marks 25 years since Omega first introduced the highly successful Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. The watch has become a great success for Omega since its premiere in 1993. To celebrate 25 years of Seamaster Diver 300M, Omega has presented a new version of the watch that has been updated on both the outside and the inside. Despite all the updates, the watch is unmistakably the next logical step for Omega’s popular diving watch. Let’s find out if it really is a different watch.

The first thing that catches your eye is its somewhat updated aesthetic. Omega decided to reintroduce the wave dial from earlier models, updating both the materials and the way it is produced. The waves are now laser engraved in a polished ceramic dial that is available in black, blue, and (PVD) chrome colors. Omega has not only updated the dial but also introduced a new ceramic bezel with the diving scale available in Ceragold or white enamel, depending on what model you prefer.

The biggest overall change, however, can be found on the inside of the watch. Omega decided to increase the size of the Seamaster 300M from 41 mm to 42 mm so it fits the Omega manufacture caliber 8800. This Master Chronometer (METAS certified) movement can withstand magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss and ensures better accuracy in tough conditions.

All in all, Omega has really created a new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M instead of just slightly updating it. You can choose from 14 different variations, of which 6 models are in stainless steel and 8 are in gold and steel. The most special version is the Titanium Tantalum Limited Edition in titanium, tantalum, and 18-karat Sedna gold, of which only 2,500 will be produced. It is a renewed version of a 1990s classic that was made of rose gold, titanium, and tantalum.

The new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M brings back some nice details from the past, but the majority of the updates firmly place this new version in modern times. The new movement enables Omega to compete with other manufacturers’ more highly priced watches currently on the market, while the updated looks of the watch are still very much what the Seamaster Diver 300M should be: a modern classic.

Omega Seamaster 1948 Limited Editions

Another big introduction for Omega are the Omega Seamaster 1948 Limited Editions. Between 1940 and 1945, Omega produced more than 110,000 timepieces for the British Ministry of Defence. The watches were used in combat by airmen of the Royal Air Force and sailors from the Royal Navy and proved to be very reliable. It inspired Omega to release a watch with the same technology and reliability for the general public. In 1948, Omega introduced the Seamaster line, the first family of watches that Omega produced. The timepieces would go on to become well respected and highly successful.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Seamaster, Omega is releasing two limited edition models that pay tribute to the classic watches from 1948. The Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds and the Seamaster 1948 Central Second both bring back the design of the original Seamaster and combine it with modern-day Omega Master Chronometer calibers. The Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds is powered by the Omega caliber 8804, and the Seamaster 1948 Central Second is powered by the Omega caliber 8806.

Both watches will be available in stainless steel with a leather strap and stainless steel clasps featuring the vintage Omega logo. The Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds includes a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock and is presented on a brown leather strap, while the Central Second features a blue-gray leather strap. The case back of both watches is made of flat sapphire glass, engraved with a 70th anniversary Seamaster logo, a Chris-Craft boat, and a Gloster Meteor plan. Each model is limited to 1,948 pieces, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to buy one.

It is nice to see Omega bring back the classic Seamaster from 1948 and to observe how the design of the watch is still very much relevant today and has become an inspiration for so many other watches.

  • A true homage to the Omega Seamaster that started it all in 1948
  • Both watches are powered by Omega Master Chronometer movements
  • The case diameter is 38 mm
  • Water-resistant to 200 feet
  • Limited to 1,948 pieces
  • List price is 5,700 Swiss Francs for the Omega Seamaster 1948 Center Seconds and 6,200 Swiss Francs for the Omega Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds
