France and Germany, two soccer powerhouses, are going head-to-head in the group stage of Euro 2020. The match-up also brings two World Cup-winning managers, Didier Deschamps and Joachim Löw, to the pitch.
Löw: Die-Hard IWC Fan
This year’s European Championship is a farewell tour for Löw. After the tournament, he is stepping down as manager of the German national team. This also marks the departure of a serious watch fan from the world of soccer. His brand of choice is unquestioningly IWC Schaffhausen. The manufacturer was a long-time partner of the DFB and has launched several special editions in their honor, including the Big Pilot’s Watch DFB Edition and the Pilot’s Double Chronograph DFB Edition.
During his peak coaching moment – winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil – Löw was wearing another famous timepiece from the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer: the Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph.
Other watches in his IWC collection include a Aquatimer “La Cumbre Volcano” chronograph, a Big Pilot’s Watch, and a black ceramic Top Gun Miramar.
Of course, Löw hasn’t gone all-in for IWC. You’ll also see him with a Rolex Datejust on his wrist every now and again. And when Germany announced this year’s Euro squad, Löw had on an Omega Seamaster Diver 300M.
Deschamps: Hublot Is a Lucky Charm
During the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup, Didier Deschamps donned a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph. As we all know, this timepiece wasn’t quite lucky enough to see France through. His team lost 1-0 to Germany and had to pack their bags early.
Beginning at the 2018 World Cup, the French manager now sports Hublot watches – with much greater success. He had a Big Bang chronograph on his wrist when his team beat Croatia in the final. He also wore a Spirit of Big Bang in King Gold and the Big Bang Connected smartwatch at various points throughout the tournament.
